About: I am a private tutor who has been working formally and informally for over 10 years, including three years of professional experience with a tutoring company. I have worked with students ages 5-18 across a variety of subjects, including SAT/ACT, entrance exams, math (all levels), biology, physics, literature, writing, and more. I am hoping to create a group of up to 10 students that I will give in-person support to (different grades ok) for 12-20 hours per week during and/or after the school day. This is a great opportunity for anyone who is concerned with their student having difficulty learning in an online-only model and would like to ensure their student has focus, direction, and support during the independent/collaborative work time, as well as the opportunity to interact in-person with their peers. In addition to academic support, I am also able to offer tutoring for the SAT, ACT, and college application support for high school juniors and seniors. More about me: I am a fun, outgoing science nerd who was born & raised in Alexandria before moving to Springfield at age 10. I attended Mount Eagle Elementary, Springfield Estates Elementary, and Mark Twain Middle School. I went to high school at TJHSST ('11) before going to Stanford to get a B.S. in Biomechanical Engineering ('15). After graduating from Stanford I began living and working in Oakland, CA as a private tutor, doing primarily one-on-one work, as well as small group tutoring and classroom-based after school programs. In 2018, I moved back to Alexandria, where I currently reside. I like to encourage my students to think critically about the information they are learning, and love to help them place the things they learn into a broader context & see the relevance to their own life. In addition, one of my favorite aspects of tutoring is helping students to create and/or strengthen organizational practices and habits that they can carry with them into the world at large. I would like to collaborate with a pod of parents to determine the best house(s) to host "class" based on the number of students I will be working with. Each week, the students and I will meet at one of the designated houses equipped with masks, student-provided laptops/tablets, and school supplies—if more than one house has been agreed on, we’ll rotate weekly. For in-school support: I will be on hand to ensure students are able to log in to the correct class at the correct time, answer any questions that come up in the course of instruction that are not able to be addressed by the students’ teachers at the time, provide support during independent/group work time, and collaborate with students to schedule meetings during their teachers’ office hours as needed. Weather-permitting, we will take an outdoor lunch break, as well as outdoor breaks in between classes to move our bodies and re-focus—otherwise, we'll social distance inside. After school we'll do a closing activity that will include a recap of the day's events, making note of any new assignments and their due dates, making a plan to complete those assignments, and creating questions to bring to office hours. For after school support: The students and I will start with a recap of the day’s classes, including a review of existing assignments and their due dates, followed by creating a plan of action for any new assignments received that day. Content for each day will depend on students’ needs, with a focus put on the most urgent assignments and most difficult material or, if desired, a schedule can be set for specific subjects on specific days (e.g. M: Physics & English, T: Math W: Physics & History, etc.). Depending on the needs of the group, one or two days can be dedicated to SAT/ACT/college app prep. My goal is to provide in-person educational assistance to those who most need it in both a SAFE and AFFORDABLE way. Because of this, I will be prioritizing families willing to work together to keep shared costs low, those who will agree to wear masks for the duration of our sessions & minimize exposure risk outside of sessions, families with middle school students seeking day-time supervision & support, and families with high school seniors in need of college application support. I want to collaborate with you to work out the specific details as we learn more about what this school year will look like in order to make sure that everyone involved feels comfortable and confident with this endeavor.
