About: Hi! I'm offering college-prep, English and writing, or full curriculum pods. Here's more about me: After years of figuring it out the hard way, I graduated toward the top of my class at Dartmouth College, and now want to be the mentor for you or your child that I wish I had when I was younger. I love engaging with my students and fostering their confidence and talent. Here is a breakdown of my services -- any of these topics can be the focus of a pod... College Prep (skip down for homeschooling information): As a college prep expert, I have been featured in Variety Magazine and flown to China to do workshops for one of the country’s largest education companies. I’ve spoken to over 500 families in over 10 cities about tailoring applications to elite universities. Having interviewed applicants for an Ivy League school, Dartmouth College, as an alumni volunteer, I know what top schools are looking for. That’s how I’ll ensure you or your child has an edge over the competition. My specialty is guiding students through the college application essay. I believe everybody has a story to tell, and together we can tell that story in a way that fits the specific criteria admissions officers hope to find. My experience as an award wining screenwriter helps me coach students through the storytelling elements of an exceptional college essay. My students have gotten into: Brown University, Columbia University School of Professional Studies, USC Viterbi School of Engineering, Purdue University, Virginia Tech, Oberlin College, Colorado School of Mines, University of Colorado Boulder, Rochester Institute of Technology, Embry-Riddle, among others! -- Homeschooling: I love engaging with kids of any grade level and helping them tap into their own motivation and ability. As an English teacher, I ran a class inside Juvenile Hall, which has taught me how to engage even the most difficult students. Perhaps it's also worth mentioning that the position came with LA County's strictest safety and background checks. As a math and science teacher, I have had a student medal in the regional science fair, and another student say they finally understand math after struggling for years. I will gladly put you in touch with happy parents! My other focus areas are creative writing and filmmaking. As a one-man production team, I directed a feature documentary in Nepal and Nicaragua which won "Best International Documentary" at the Laughlin Film Festival. And I won a spot in the CAPE New Writer's Fellowship for screenwriting. -- I'm located in Sherman Oaks, but am able to travel. I also offer online teaching, which students find as engaging and rewarding as in-person work. One class I have designed and am teaching online is about the history of literature, from Ancient Greek, through the Renaissance, all the way to modern and post modern writers and artists. During the class, we learn how to analyze a work of literature and write a powerful, Ivy League-quality essay! I think it's amazing to see how our art has reflected and impacted the major events of human history and evolved with us -- I would love to share this passion with your students! I will gladly customize any course to your liking and learning style.
